Culinary Students Win Big at State Competition

Central Campus Culinary Arts students were big winners at the Iowa FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America) State Leadership Conference over the weekend.

More than 600 students from FCCLA chapters came together to learn more about leadership and compete in STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) events.

The students must demonstrate proficiency and achievement in chapter and individual projects, career preparation and leadership.

Members from the DMPS Central Campus Culinary Arts chapter received the following medals in their respective categories:

• Kaitlyn Vance (East) – Silver Medal in Advocacy
• Alexis Morris (East) & Heidi Seher (East) – Gold Medal and 1st Place in Chapter Service Project Display
• Natalia Koenig (Lincoln) and Camille Harmon (East) – Bronze Medal in Culinary Arts
• Linzee Abuhl (North), Molly Reisman (Lincoln), Shelby Sonderleiter – Gold Medal and 1st Place in Culinary Arts
• Dan Carpenter (Lincoln) and Jesse Brookshire (East) – Gold Medal and 1st Place in Entrepreneurship
• Myles Boone (East) and Kaleb Shoemaker (Lincoln) – Silver Medal in Food Innovations
• Chris Harban (Lincoln) and Molly Seher (East) – Silver Medal in Sports Nutrition
• Veronica Purdy (Lincoln) – Bronze Medal in Hospitality, Recreation, and Tourism

The members receiving the highest score in each event category qualify to move onto the National STAR Event competition held at the 2015 National Leadership Conference in Washington, DC.

The State Leadership Conference is an opportunity for Iowa FCCLA members to celebrate the past year of hard work on various projects as well as develop their leadership skills with members from around the state. The 2014-2015 theme was “Capture the Moment.” Outstanding leadership was demonstrated through participation in STAR Events, National Programs, and Peer Education by students in grades 7 through 12.

FCCLA, formerly FHA, teaches students financial literacy, health and nutrition, career preparation, and early childhood development skills through Family and Consumer Sciences education. FCCLA is a unique organization because its programs are planned and run by student members. It is the only student-led organization with the family as its central focus. FCCLA has more than 220,000 members and nearly 7,000 chapters in fifty state associations, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. The organization has involved more than ten million youth since it was founded in 1945.
