Baby piglets at the Ag Lab
The Iowa Pork Producers Association donated 12 piglets form the ISU Swine Teaching Farm to the Des Moines Ag Program. This is the fourth year with this partnership. The piglets will be raised by the 70 students in the program until January. They will then be processed at Story City Locker and sold to HyVee. HyVee puts the pork in four of their Des Moines stores. One of the pigs will be donated to the DMARC food pantry.
Students learn how to care for an manage the pigs. They also learn basic vet skills if an animal gets sick. Throughout the time with the pigs the students will conduct a feed research trial.
