Roosevelt High School senior Lizbeth Baez-Jimenez, who is also a student in the Early Childhood Careers Program at Central Campus, was awarded a $12,000 scholarship to pursue early childhood education. The scholarship is thanks the local chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma.

She plans to use the scholarship to teach young ELL students after completing her college education.

Baez-Jimenez was presented with the award on Thursday at Central Campus by Carole Henning, representing Delta Kappa Gamma. Also attending were her parents, instructor Younghee Steenhoek, and Central Campus director Tascha Brown.The Delta Kappa Gamma Tau Chapter of Polk County, a society of female educators, provides support to female students who want to pursue teaching as a career.

She will receive an award of $3,000 each year for up to four years of college, as long as she is successfully enrolled in an accredited teacher education program.

Applicants for the scholarship must submit an application, transcript, two letters of recommendation on how they would contribute to the teaching profession, and an essay on why they wish to pursue a career as an educator.
