Sam Oppel is a former band director having taught in Decorah, IA and Carlisle, IA. He graduated from the University of Northern Iowa IN 2001 with a BME in K-12 instrumental music. He received his masters in Teaching with an emphasis in curriculum and instruction in 2007 from the University of Saint Mary. He has worked part time at the Apple Store Jordan Creek where he conducted device and operating system workshops and trainings. In 2010, Sam decided to pursue his passion for educational technology and became a teacher for AEA PD Online. He has developed courses for teacher professional development and graduate credit. His courses include: iPods & iPads for the Classroom; Introduction to Google Apps; iMovie, iPhoto, & GarageBand in the Classroom; The Global Classroom; Introduction to Preparing and Teaching in a 1:1 Environment; Formative Assessment With and Without Technology; Pinterest in the Classroom.
In 2010, Sam also became the technology director for Cherokee Community School District. Sam then joined PCM Community School District as the District Technology Teaching and Learning Facilitator. At PCM, Mr. Oppel developed and proposed seamless second 1:1 initiative with an $800,000 budget to PCM Board,established and led PCM technology committee to oversee technology in the district, directed professional development initiatives such as TICL to establish a system for teachers to train and support one another in technology integration at PCM, led alignment of PCM technology curriculum to the Iowa Core, created and implemented middle school technology curriculum, created HyperStream PCM technology club from STEM grants, wrote successful applications for over $30,000 in grants for district technology use at PCM, established diverse IT department at PCM responsible for in-house repairs resulting in savings exceeding $10,000 annually, and redesigned PCM website to be more automated, user friendly, and integrated with Google Apps. Sam is highly motivated to give students at Central Campus the best instruction and foundation of skills to help them achieve excellence in a career in technology!
