Career Opportunities in Health Mock Interviews
Career Opportunities in Health is a program at Central Campus that provides observation experience within Unity Point Health-DM hospitals, along with some private clinics around the metro; in addition to the observation experiences, students have classroom experiences to hear from medical professionals, visit local collegiate institutions and learn about topics relevant to the world of healthcare. One specific piece of the classroom side of the program includes the opportunity for the morning class to take a college level English course. The final for the English class was mock interviews and throughout the last semester of English, the COH class prepared for the interviews. The students practiced interview questions, handshakes, and appropriate body language. The format was a five to seven minute interview with ten different interviewers throughout the morning; the interviews were held at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in the Education Research Center Kelly Conference Room and the interviewers consisted of 14 Unity Point Health-DM managers & supervisors and 2 LifeServe Blood Center personnel. After each interview, the interviewer would reflect and grade the student’s performance; the “grade” included: appearance, professionalism, attitude, self-confidence, body language, eye contact, quality of answers, and grammar. This was an amazing experience for student growth and authentic learning. According to the class, the atmosphere really felt like a real interview and was great preparation for the real world.
