Culinary Arts program continues recognition as the Best of the Best

The Des Moines Central Campus Culinary Arts FCCLA Chapter from Des Moines, Iowa along with over 500 members from FCCLA chapters across the state attended the Iowa FCCLA State Leadership Conference on April 3-5, 2016 and participated in STAR Events (Students Taking Action with Recognition). These are highly competitive events which members are recognized for proficiency and achievement in chapter and individual projects, career preparation, and leadership. The members receiving the highest score in each event category qualify to move onto the National STAR Event competition held at the 2016 National Leadership Conference in San Diego, CA.

Members from the Des Moines Central Campus Culinary Arts chapter received the following medals in their respective categories:

  • Kiara Bosley (Lincoln), Natalie Hahn (Roosevelt), Nova Konchalski (Lincoln) – Gold Medal in Focus on Children and will be advancing to National Competition in San Diego, CA in July!
  • Camille Harmon (East), Mackenzie Sleeth (East) – Silver Medal in Entrepreneurship
  • Hailey Ballentine (Lincoln), Skylar Smith (Lincoln) – Silver Medal in Life Event Planning
  • Myles Boone (East), Kaleb Creighton-Crum (Roosevelt), William Guffey (North), Noah Meyers (Home Instruction), Jatciri “Yadira” Ordaz (East) – Bronze Medals in Culinary Arts
    Kaleb Shoemaker (Lincoln) – Bronze Medal in Advocacy
  • Chris Harban (Lincoln), Molly Seher (East) – Bronze Medal in Sports Nutrition

FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America), formerly FHA, teaches students financial literacy, health and nutrition, career preparation, and early childhood development skills through Family and Consumer Sciences education. FCCLA is the only student-led organization with the family as its central focus. FCCLA has more than 220,000 members and nearly 7,000 chapters in fifty state associations, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. The organization has involved more than ten million youth since it was founded in 1945.
