Urban Teacher Academy students earn honors and grants

Urban Teacher Academy, led by instructor Carole Henning, held its end-of-year recognition night on May 10. Throughout the evening the future educators showcased their teaching portfolios for family, friends and the community.

As part of the events, 13 students became the first in the Des Moines Public Schools to earn placement on the Educators Rising honor roll. To earn this recognition, students must have a minimum 3.5 GPA. Educators Rising is a national organization of high school students interested in becoming teachers.

Finally – Carole Henning, leader of the Urban Teacher Academy at Central Campus, presents high school senior Dimetrea Hamilton a $12,000 grant-in-aid award from the Epsilon Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma May 10. Dimetrea was selected from a field of applicants from high schools all around Polk County. Delta Kappa Gamma is a national organization of female educators.
